Before standardisation, equipment had to be made for use at two different voltages: one for the UK and one for continental Europe.
In 1993, European legislation was introduced to standardise the voltage of electricity supplied across Europe. This change had two main benefits:
- It allowed electricity to be generated in one country and supplied to another, making it easier to share power across borders.
- It allowed manufacturers to design electrical appliances that could be used all over Europe, without the need for different versions for different countries.
Since the European market is much bigger than the UK market, electrical equipment is designed to work best at 220 volts. However, the national average voltage in the UK is around 242 volts
When your electrical equipment operates at 220-225 volts, it stays within the tolerances specified by the CE (Conformité Européene) regulations. This means it runs at its most efficient level and has a longer lifespan. If you have more than 225 volts going into your equipment, you are over-powering it, and it’s costing you more money as you’re using electricity that the equipment doesn’t need. By ensuring your equipment receives the right voltage, you can save on energy costs and extend the life of your appliances.
